Cara Beth Satalino hat so etwas versteckt, bezauberndes in ihrer Stimme. Sie ist großer Fan von Greg Sage und den Wipers und diese melancholische Stimmung die bei den Wipers auch ja immer mitschwingt ist hier deutlich zu hören. Mrs Chan Marshall (Cat Power) trägt hier ein Kleid zu Hofe und nicht unweit von der Party wartet Mr. Dan Sartain, als Rowdy gebrandmarkt auf eine kleine Rangelei. Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis sind geladen für ein Akustik Set. Neil Young wäre nicht Neil Young wenn er der Einladung nicht höflich abgesagt hätte um dann doch kurz einzukehren und PJ Harvey mit dabei zu haben.
Breeders hängen wo rum mit Thurston Moore, und J Mascis ist sich noch nicht sicher ob er das kommende Album eigentlich produzieren soll oder lieber in Urlaub fährt, während Ken Chambers (Moving Targets) später noch Mission of Burma und Replacements Coverversionen spielt. Fehlt noch? Jones Very. Ja Jones Very, eine der total untergegangenen Höhepunkte des Post Punk Rocks. Wo stecken die denn dieser Tage? Also aus Athens / Georgia haben wir hier diese neue Band. Witches und Cara Beth Satalino singt bei Witches, hat aber auch ihr eigenes solo Projekt um das es hier geht. Entrückt großartige Stimme, coole verlorene und sehnsüchtge Songs für Rotwein- und Vollmondnächte. Im März ist sie für zwei Wochen auf Tour gefolgt von einer Band Tour im Mai teilweise zusammen mit forgetters, der neuen Band von Blake Schwarzenbach (x Jawbreaker, x Jets to Brazil), Kevin Macon (x Against Me!) und Caroline Paquita (x Bitches).

Witches is the new rock band from singer/songwriter Cara Beth Satalino. Satlino’s earthy vocals have always brought to mind female artists like PJ Harvey or even Chan Marshall but with Witches they are giving a setting that accentuates her pipes even more. Here Satilino’s stunning vocals and powerful songwriting collide with walls of cascading guitar rock. It is a striking combination to behold. The hyper guitars wail behind Satalino as the bass and drums keep up at a steady pace. Mining indie rock circa the mid-nineties, What starts out as something ordinary soon turns into an amazing and beautiful display.Punk by allegiance and attitude, pop by virtue of their wistful melodicism, Witches are a band borne of singularly American originality.
Cara Beth Satalino is a New York-born chanteuse with a rougher than typical edge. Michael Clancy, a fellow Yankee, is a selftaught drummer of natural ability and feel. Jared Gandy, veteran of Athens groups with both DIY punk and Elephant Six Collective pedigree alike, rounds out the band’s lineup on bass guitar. The band takes touches of the Breeders‘ feminine boldness, Des Ark’s brusque emotional stance, and the wide-open, true rock n‘ roll worldliness of Midwestern punk idols the Replacements.
When Cara and Clancy moved to Athens after graduating from an upstate New York university (SUNY Purchase, the unlikely hotbed of creativity that produced Dan Deacon and other notable weirdos), Cara already had a swath of noteworthy solo material under her belt. After a spate of performances accompanied only by her electric guitar, she sought out a rhythm section. Clancy wasn’t a drummer at the time, but he stepped up to the plate to do the songs justice. To listen to the band now, Clancy’s abilities cannot be stepped to—he’s a songwriter’s drummer, for sure. As the two pondered a possible bassist, Jared’s name came up—and he promptly walked into the room, gliding on the winds of sheer coincidence. Jared’s melodic, wandering basslines were an obvious match to Cara’s guitar playing, and provide McCartney-esque counterpoint to her full vocal timbre.
Which brings us to the centerpiece of Witches‘ appeal: Cara Beth Satalino is what puts the band over the top and sutures their songs into one’s memory. She sings with simultaneous pointed honesty and dignified modesty. You can hear barbs and arrows in the songs that make up “Forever”, Witches‘ forthcoming full-length album, released on Bakery Outlet Records and The Company With the Golden Arm. Some are directed outwardly; others seem to take aim for the singer herself. All, however, hit their mark with a precision that warrants respect.
